CONTROL OF IMPORTS
LICENSING INSTITUTED IN AUSTRALIA FOREIGN EXCHANGE PROBLEM. EFFECT ON CANADIAN TRADE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. CANBERRA. November 30. The Minister of Customs, Mr Lawson, announced that licensing for the importation of goods would begin tomorrow. This had been brought about by the shortage of foreign, exchange in non-sterling countries. A message from Ottawa states that the Australian import restrictions are likely drastically to reduce AustralianCanadian trade, possibly by half. It is believed that it will be difficult to restrict Canada’s exports by the full one-sixth contemplated, since several essential commodities are best obtainable in Canada, including lumber, newsprint and automobile chassis. Officials decline to comment on whether the restrictions violate the AustralianCanadian trade pact. BITTER FIGHTING BATTLE AT TERIJOKI. (Received This Day, 10.20 a.m.) STOCKHOLM. December 1.
