MILITARY PAY
CONTENTION IN AUSTRALIA FATE OF GOVERNMENT STILL IN BALANCE. DEMAND FOR BASIC WAGE FOR SOLDIERS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. SYDNEY, December 1. The threat of a premature election and the fate of the Federal Government will remain in the balance till Tuesday, when it is expected that the political crisis over the question of an increase in rates of military pay—an increase to which the Government refuses to agree—will be revived. In the meantime the Government will have an opportunity to consider what compromise, if any, can justifiably be made to meet the demand of the Opposition for “nothing less than the basic wage for soldiers.” The Country Party will also have time to consider whether it will form a common front with Labour and demand a showdown. Sir Earle Page, during the debate, urged the adoption of New Zealand rates for soldiers and their dependants.
