WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
UPPER PLAIN MEETING. COMPETITION WINNERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a large attendance of members and visitors from other institutes on the occasion of the fourth birthday of the Upper Plain Women’s Institute. The president (Mrs G. Dagg) welcomed the visitors and presented one from each institute with a shoulder spray. There were two competitions won during the afternoon. Two elocutionary items were given by Miss E. Thomas and were much enjoyed. A birthday cake was made by Miss O. Trass and iced by Mrs W. Thomas and decorated with four candles which were lighted by Mrs Scott and extinguished by the secretary, Mrs Mannel, who cut the cake. Afternoon tea was served by the committee. A demonstration and display of poker work attracted a good deal of attention and was much admired. A sales stall was conducted during the afternoon and did good business, everything being sold. The competitions for during the year were wen as follow: —Rose bowl donated by Mrs P. R. Welch for the most entries in the best blooms, Mrs C. R. Jones; most entries. Mrs Jones, 1: most points in cooking. Mrs W. Taplin, 1. A very pleasant gathering was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem.
