IN MT COOK GLACIER. TRAGEDY OF 25 YEARS AGO RECALLED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) TIMARU, November 26. A tragedy on the Linda Glacier. Mount Cook, early in 1924, when Sydney King, a member of the Alpine Club, London, and Guides D. Thomson and J. Richmond, were overwhelmed by an avalanche after a successful ascent of Mount Cook, was recalled this week by the discovery of a human trunk, a piece of bone with a sock adhering. a quantity of clothing, and portion of a rucksack. The discovery was made by two Timaru men, who went for a walk on the lower portion of the Hochstetler Glacier, off the track usually taken by tourists. The trunk was minus head, arms and legs; and was compressed to a thickness of about three inches, but the flesh was well preserved. The clothing consisted of tweed. There was also underclothing and wind-break material and portion of a light rucksack. The type of clothing suggests that the body is that of Dr King and not the guides, who would be differently attired. The remains have travelled over the icebreaks on the Linda Glacier and down a distance of four miles in a period of just over 25 years.
