GREYTOWN

FAREWELL GATHERING AIRMAN GUEST OF HONOUR. ("Times-Age” Special.) ) The Odd Fellows' Hall was packed i on Saturday evening when a farewell I was tendered to Flying-Officer L. J Loasby, who is leaving New Zealand i with the next batch of airmen for . England. The Mayor, Mr A. W. Horton, con- ■ gratulated Mr Loasby on his flying ’ ability. He stated that Mr Loasby was > a Grey town-born boy who had been a ! keen boxer, footballer and swimmer, i learnt his flying with the Wairarapa , Aero Club, and then joined the Union Airways. , Mr J. F. Thompson made a presen- : tation, on behalf of Flying-Officer , Loasby's many friends, of a writing 1 case and diary to the guest of the • evening. Mr Thompson expressed the , hope that he would have many happy i landings. He felt sure that the experi- : ence Mr Loasby had received in flying on the New Zealand commercial routes would be of great benefit overseas. Mr H. G. Carter etxended best wishes to Mr Loasby from the Wairarapa Returned Soldiers’ Association. Restated that the Association would watch with great interest the career of Mr Loasby, and expressed the hope that when the war was over he would return and join the ranks of the Returned Diggers. Flying-Officer Loasby suitably replied. During the evening all present inscribed their names in the presentation diary. The music for the dancing was supplied by Messrs V. Boyd and S. Te Tati and Mr B. Roberts acted as M.C. Mr W. Brown and Miss Bouzaid gave an exhibition of tap dancing, Miss Josie Dennes rendered two humorous recitations, and Mesdames T. Gold and B. Feast sang two duets. The gathering closed with the singing of Auld Lang Syne and the National Anthem. BUCHANAN HOME VISIT BY CONCERT PARTY. The Anglican Gipsy Fair concert party entertained inmates of the Buchanan Home, Greytown, on Saturday afternoon at a concert and afternoon tea party. The' soloists were Mesdames S. Shedden, G. Robinson and Miss D. Bennett. Miss Josie Dennes recited, and Misses Pat and Nadine Sugrue pleased their audience with tap and Gipsy dances. The second part of the programme took the form of a community sing, the old time songs being greatly enjoyed by the old folk. At the conclusion of the programme Matron Higginson expressed her thanks to the party for giving them such a delightful programme. “Gran” Morris, on behalf of the old ' folk, thanked the entertainers. Miss Caroline Gray then presented Mrs Shedden, organiser, and Mrs H. : G. Carter, pianist, with a pretty posy each. She then handed all the old folk a buttonhole. The Matron and sisters entertained ’ the party at afternoon tea in the nurse’s dining room. The Greytown party will hold a dance in the Odd Fellows’ Hall on Friday next. The proceeds are in aid of Christmas cheer for the inmates of ’ Buchanan Home. £ j Personal Items. r Mrs D. P. Loasby and Miss D. ‘ Loasby, of Wellington, were visitors to Greytown for the weekend. Mr Roy Richards was home for the 1 weekend from Trentham Camp. 1 Mr H. Keltie, Junr., of Pahiatua. j spent the weekend at Greytown. *
