WAIRARAPA COLLEGE
MEETING OF THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS.
The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa College Board of Governors was held last night. The chairman. Mr W. R. Nicol, presided. Also present were Mrs C. C. Jackson, and Messrs L. J. Taylor, Alex Donald, F. C. Daniell, A. Owen Jones. E. Hanley and L. T. Daniell. An apology for absence was received from Mr W. H. Saunders.
The Principal, Mr G. G. Hancox. reported that the average roll for the last four weeks had been 432, 431, 429, 427 and the average attendance 372, 391. 397 and 400. The evening classes concluded on November 23. The Educational Research Officer, Mr McQueen, visited the College on October 27, and Miss Hetherington, Secondary Inspector, on November 8 and 9. Mr A. A. Kirk and Miss Jull, vocational guidance • officers from the Youth Centre, Wellington, interviewed a number of parents and pupils on October 27 and 28. The Agricultural class had paid visits, by the school bus, for demonstration purposes to the following properties: Mr L. A. Keats, Mt Bruce; L. T. Daniell, Masterton; John Ogilvy, Gladstone, and the Wairarapa P. and A. Show. The annual athletic sports were held in good weather on Thursday, November 2, when there was a large attendance of parents. Several records were broken. The champions were: Boys: Senior, A. Mahupuka; intermediate, I. Prior; junior, A. Dewar; under 14, E. Nahkies. Girls: Senior, Elaine Hanley and Ngaire Richards (equal); intermediate, Joan Grantham; junior, Thelma Saunders. At the secondary schools’ athletic tournament held in Wellington on November 11, our team gained the following places:— Senior: A. Mahupuku, 2nd 440yds, 3rd 880yds; intermediate, I. Prior, 3rd 120yds; hurdles, 3 long jump; junior. A. Dewar, 2nd high jump. A donation had been received from Messrs Barber Bros towards the bus fund. Miss Isabelle Dale had presented two miniature cups to be awarded to the senior girl athletic champions for the year. The three-acre farm paddock had been planted. Mr Nops had given the grazing of his paddock in Renall Street. The boys, under the guidance of Messrs D. McGovern and N. McKay, had shorn the sheep on November 8 and 9. The Parents’ Association held an enjoyable card evening’ on October 30. The evening students were holding a dance on Saturday. December 2. An evening for parents of present pupils would be held on Tuesday, November 28, at 7 o’clock. The annual exhibition would be held on Wednesday evening, November 29, at 7 o’clock. Form 2 pupils (Std 6) and their parents were being invited to visit the College on Saturday afternoon, December 2, from 8 o’clock. The Parents' Association were holding a Gala Day on Saturday, February 24. concluded Mr Hancox.
The report of the Works Committee stated that routine work had been carried out during'the month. The auxiliary pumping plant was not yet installed, and in view of the Borough hosing restrictions announced, the auxiliary supply was considered urgent.
The British Trade Commissioner, Sir Harry Batterbee, advised that he would be unable to speak at the break-up ceremony.
