“Several of you are asking whether it is permissable to lunch or dine or leave in smart restaurants and grill rooms when wearing the uniforms ol privates, n.c.o.’s or mechanics” (writes Charles Graves in the London "Daily Mail”). "The answer is that so far n< sartorial law has been laid down by the authorities, and on various occasions in the past few days I have seen sergeants in the R.A.F. sitting at the next table to wing commanders, with corporals and privates in the Arm? near captains and majors. It was ail very jolly and democratic, and unless some instructions from the War Office are given it will presumably so continue.”
