PATRIOTIC FUNDS
WHO SHOULD CONTRIBUTE POSITION OF LOCAL BODIES. i "'rimes-Age" Special.) "Should a local body, or individual ratepayers contribute to Patriotic funds?" This question came before the Featherston County Council at its meeting today, when a letter was read from the Wellington Patriotic Council asking for a representative to attend a meeting of the Zone B to be held at Greytown on Wednesday. November 15. to consider the steps to be taken in connection with the appeal for funds. . The chairman (Mr A. B. Martin): "1 am absolutely against local bodies giving anything. It is outside their scope and should be left to the individual."
Councillor J. McLeod pointed out that by subscribing to patriotic funds was one way of helping to win the war. "Somebody has to give the money," he said. The chairman observed that if both the local bodies and individuals subscribed many people gave twice. Other councillors agreed with this viewpoint but the general opinion of the council was that it should not commit itself until more was heard about the matter, following the chairman's attendance at the zone meeting and his report to the council.
