FEATHERSTON COUNTY

TODAY’S MEETING OF COUNCIL ROAD CONSTRUCTION POLICY. ("Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Featherston County Council was held today at Martinborough, the chairman, Mr A. B. Martin, presiding. Other councillors present were Messrs R. W. Matthews. Guy Gillies, J. McLeod, R. Smith, D. Cameron, J. C. Bidwill, Q. Donald, L. J. Thompson.

Mr R. R. P. Hardy, Featherston, wrote asking the council to form and metal the road leading from his place to the river, as if this were done it would enable him to increase his farm production. The matter was left to the engineer to report to the next meeting. The clerk (Mr H. Hardinge) was requested to make inquiries concerning the renewal of a lease to an applicant at Lake Ferry.

The Moroa Water-race Committee wrote stating that a water-race culvert on Phillips's line, opposite W. Hatching's residence, was in a bad state of repair; also that a culvert on the Tauherenikau road near C. Gardener’s property, was blocked. The committee considered that all wooden culverts should be replaced by concrete ones where the road was sealed. The overseer was instructed to report upon the matter.

The County Clerk stated that he had given an assurance to a Wellington firm regarding milling operations at Hinakura that the council would be pleased to co-operate so long as the bylaws were observed. The County Clerk was given permission to attend the eleventh annual meeting of the Institute of Clerks (Wellington district branch) to be held at Palmerston North on November 23. “Our idea is not to do fresh construction unnecessarily," said Mr Martin. referring to a letter received from Mi- W. B. Martin, expressing the opinion in regard to a proposed £2OOO loan to cover the cost of preparation, and the sealing of roads that all fresh work should, where possible, be held over until the conclusion of the present war. “Our idea in having the money available is to enable us to consolidate a road whore it has been brought up to the specified standard out of maintenance expenditure. We have never had that money available in the past." The County Clerk and Cr Bidwill were requested to reply to a letter received from the Bidwill Dairy Co regarding the widening and sealing of the Pahautea settlement road.

Mr R.' D. Eglington wrote asking if a steep grade on the Wharekauhau Road could be altered and whether a slippery cutting could be metalled. The matter was left in the hands of Ci- Matthews to attend to.
