MARTINBOROUGH

GAMING CHARGE TOBACCONIST BEFORE COURT, (“Times-Age” Special.) Another police raid was carried out in (he Wairarapa yesterday when, as the result of a visit paid to Martinborough by Detective-Sergeant W. Kane and Constable C. Reardon. Masterton, William Attwood was charged in the Magistrate's Court, Martinborough, with using his tobacconist premises in Jellicoe Street as a common gaming-house. He was remanded to appear next Wednesday, and bail allowed in his own recognisance of £lOO.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE DYERVILLE MEETING. There was an excellent attendance at the November meeting of the Dyerville Women’s Institute, the President being the chair. Arrangements were made to hold a garden party in December.

The report of the box group was read, and also a report, of the Federation meeting in Martinborough on October 12. Sister Shadbolt kindly gave a very interesiing talk on her experiences abroad during war time in Spain; which was keenly appreciated, and a vote of thanks was passed to her by acclamation; The competitions for sponge cake without buttei' and the best bowl of flowers were both won by Mrs Jamieson, the best bloom going to Mrs Chas Smith. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Malton and J. Harris.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE MONTHLY MEETING. At the monthly meeting of the School Committee there were present —Messrs H. L. Griffiths (chairman), K. Arthur (secretary), E. Sadd (treasurer), R. Burch, R. P. George. F. B. Wright, and the Headmaster (Mi' D. C. Pryor). The Board of Education notified the transfer of Miss Mahood to the Featherston School an account of the fall in grade through decreased attendance.

Miss I. Mahood tendered hex' resignation. The chairman expressed regret that the circumstances necessitated Miss Mahood’s transfer. It would be a loss to the school and to the community. A motion of appreciation of Miss Mahood’s services during eight years' connection with the school and regret at her transfer was carried unanimously.

The appointment of Mrs Aitchison as caretaker of the school was confirmed, and the secretary’s action approved. The Headmaster reported attendance during the month as follow:; —Primary department; Roll number, 196; average attendance 172.6; Secondary 36 and 34. The staff regretted the transfer- of Miss Mahood from the school and would record appreciation of hex' helpful service. The staff expressed sympathy with the chairman in his recent bereavement.
