SCOTTISH CONCERT AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr W. M. Priest is to be heartily congratulated on the excellent programme he arranged in connection with the Scottish concert in aid of the children’s centennial playground. Every item was of a high standard and warmly received by the large audience, encores being the order of the evening. Mr Priest has a thorough grasp of public taste and presented a programme which appealed to everyone.
At a suitable interval the Mayor, Mi' W. Simpson, thanked all the performers. He said the town was indebted to them and greatly appreciated their assistance. The work in connection with the playground was progressing satisfactorily. Within a month the playground should be ready. December 1 was the day when the children would start having a good time in their own playground. “There were people who didn’t want the playground, but they didn’t want anything, not even the children.” said Mr Simpson. He also thanked Mr Priest to whom alone the credit for putting on such a splendid concert was due.
At the close of the concert the visitors were entertained at supper by Mrs D. Fraser and a band of willing helpers.
From a financial and entertainment point of view the concert was one of the most successful ever staged in the Bush district.
LAWN TENNIS CLUB ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of the Eketahuna Tennis Club, which is signed by the President, Mi - H. E. Greathead, states: —On behalf of your committee, I have great pleasure in presenting the anr nual report and balance sheet for the 1938-39 season. It was decided at last annual meeting that the club would not affiliate with the Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Assiciation fox - the season 193830. Financial: The club’s finances can be considered to be in quite a satisfactory state. Certainly no major cost for upkeep work has had to be met this season, but I would draw members’ attention to one item in particulai’ on the expenditure side, which can be classed as a distinct’ assset, and that is the amount of £3 2s 6d expended in the purchase of an electric urn, which has proved itself very useful. However, all necessary unkeep work has been strictly attended to, and despite a very considerable drop in the membership, and a substantial reduction in the subscriptions, the club has the sum of £l9 11s in the bank and cash in hand. Membership: The numbex- of members fox' the past season was: Ladies 14, men 12, giving a total of 26, which shows a drop of 27 on the previous year. Competitions: During we season the usual club competitions were played, the results being as follow: Ladies’ championship singles, Miss B. Boyes; ladies’ junior championship, Miss B. Fraser; ladies’ handicap doubles, Miss N. Greathead and Miss W. O’Donnell. Men’s championship singles, Mi- R. Johnson; men’s junior championship, Mr R. Payne; men’s handicap doubles, R. Johnson and D. Howden. During the season inter-club matches were played against Nireaha, Cross Creek, Hastwells and Alfredton, these matches being greatly enjoyed by all participating members. It is hoped that these friendly matches will again be a feature of the coming season. Unfortunately since the conclusion of the season, we have lost several members, notable among them being Messrs R. Johnson -and D. Howden. both of whom were keen players, and a considerable asset to the club. In conclusioix. I should like to thank the committee and all members fox' their enthusiastic support during the past season, and trust that the coming season may be as much a success as possible under the prevailing conditions.”
