STORY ABOUT THE ACHILLES DENIED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. A denial of a rumour that the New Zealand cruiser Achilles had been badly damaged in action with an enemy vessel was given yesterday by the Minister of Defence, Mr Jones. The Minister made it clear that no information of that kind had been received by the Government. “I am surprised that this rumour should have gained currency,” the Minister- said. “I have received no message of that kind, and it is only reasonable to expect that the Government or myself would be the first to be advised if anything of that kind had happened. All I can say is that it is unfortunate that rumours of this kind should be spread, and I can assure the public that I have received no information of the Achilles being involved in any happening of the kind."
