Oriental Parade Improvements.
One of the most striking improvements from an aesthetic point of view made in Wellington during the past year has been the creation of the flower and lawn plots in Oriental Parade. The shrubs in the southern section have flourished and now form a delightful screen to the fence of the Corporation yards. Recently the brickwork kerbs have been oiled, while the footpaths have been brushed with cement and generally reconditioned. Just north, of the Te Aro baths there is a subsidence which has twisted the footpath out of shape. This was caused by a washaway under the seawall opposite, and will have to be attended to this summer.
Supplies of Sacks. An appeal to all users of sacks to conserve supplies as far as possible was issued last night by the Minister of Agriculture. Mr Lee Martin. "Since the outbreak of war the prices of jute sacks have risen sharply and new corn sacks to arrive next year will be appreciably dearer,” the Minister said. "Arrangements have been made to import extra supplies this year and it is expected that there will be no shortage of new sacks for those purposes for which it is imperative to use them. New sacks must be provided for milling wheat, for export grass and clover seed, and for export peas, and considerable quantities are necessary also in the freezing industry for packing boneless beef and certain sundries.
