Mr W. McAliece, of Pownall Street, Masterton, has been appointed union agent and representative in the Masterton borough and surrounding area for the Labourers' and Related Trades Industrial Union of Workers. Guests at the Midland Hotel, Masterton are Messrs Clark-Johnstone, A. Tunyelman, J. Staples, E. R. Tremaine, T. Quinn and J. Wilkie (Wellington); J. Allan (Christchurch); P. Solomon (Dunedin); T. J. Allan (Hastings). Dr lan Fraser, Levin, accepted a call from the Wyndham Church, Southland, at a meeting of the Wellington Presbytery yesterday afternoon. After the meeting members of the presbytery said farewell to Dr Fraser at afternoon tea.
Staying at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Masterton are Messrs H. D. Carline, A. W. Foote and M. J. Akel (Wellington); S. McCarthy (Auckland); C. Wrighton (Hastings); H. Wilson (Tinui); B. Allan, A. Jamieson and M. White (Palmerston North).
Mr F. H. Bethwaite stated at a recent meeting of the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce that he intended resigning from the executive of the New Zealand Associated Chambers of Commerce. Mr D. G. O'Toole has been nominated to fill the vacancy.
Mr J. R. Wilson, of Ahiaruhe, who served for four years in the Great War, winning the M.M. and the D.C.M., has enlisted for home defence. Mr Wilson recently retired from farming, but when the call came for enlistments he offered his services though well over the military age.
The committee members of the Wairarapa Inter-House Association last night presented a cigarette case to Mr J. D. Baybutt who is shortly leaving for camp with the special force. Mr G. Daubney, in making the presentation, referred to the keenness always shown by Mr Baybutt in the work of the Association and wished him good luck and a safe return.
When the pupils of Wairarapa College assembled this morning, the Principal, Mr G. G. Hancox, made feeling reference to the death of Squadron-Leader Lennox Lamb. Mr Hancox sketched the .career of Squadron Leader Lamb and the serious loss his death was to the Air Force. He expressed deep sympathy with the relatives. As a token of sympathy, the pupils stood in silence for a minute, and the flag was flown at half mast at the College till ten o’clock. There was a large gathering of Wellington cricketers in the Grand Hotel to farewell Mr A. Varney, who left last night for Dunedin, after having held the position of secretary of the Wellington Cricket Association for the last 14 years. The president of the Wellington Cricket Association, Mr M. F. Luckie, on behalf of the cricketers of Wellington, asked Mr Varney, on Mrs Varney’s behalf, to accept a silver tea and coffee service as a mark of keen appreciation of the services he had given as secretary of the association.
