WOMEN’S LEAGUE
MONTHLY MEETING. INTERESTING TALK ON MUSIC. The monthly meeting of the League of Mothers was held in the Parish Flail, Masterton, on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs L. B. Maunsell presided, and asked all members to stand for a few moments in sympathy with the relatives of the late Mesdames J. Davie and J. Logan. A most interesting address was given by Mrs Miller Hope, which she entitled “The Growth of Nationalism in Music.” After explaining that her remarks were in a lighter vein than our present thoughts of war, she pointed out that the arts when crushed by oppression and war always rose again with vigour. Music was a universal language and each country produced its own “national flavour” in music, according to the work and temperament of its people. The typical national music of Norway, Germany, Bohemia, Poland, England. Scotland and Wales were illustrated by members of the League choir. Mrs Miller Hope especially thanked them for the trouble they had taken to learn and sing the items she had required to illustrate her remarks. Solos and duets were sung by Mesdames Snowsill, Bourke, Heyder, Speight, Traynor, Bennett, Miss McClymont played a Chopin waltz and Mesdames Bennett and Hope a Slavonic duet. The gathering was greatly enjoyed by all members and friends. Two new members were enrolled. The hostesses were Mesdames Speight, Pearce. Emery, Wadham, Russell, and Mabson.
