BELATED ALLEGATION

GUNS CARRIED ON LINER ATHENIA ACCORDING TO GUSTAV ANDERSON. AMERICAN STATE DEPARTMENT TO INQUIRE. By Telegrapn—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 10.10 a.m.) WASHINGTON. October 17. Mr Gustav Anderson, a travel bureau operator, and a passenger in the Athenia, has filed an affidavit with the State Department, asserting that the Athenia was carrying coast defence guns to Canada and was being fitted out as a raider for the return trip. His assertions are based upon alleged remarks by the chief officer, Mr Copeland. Mr Anderson stated that the Department had received several scores of affidavits from passengers. Mr Hull told the press that Mr Anderson’s statement was the first intimation from any source that the Athenia carried guns and promised to publish full details when the departmental inquiry had been completed.
