“WARNING” CONVEYED TO U.S.A.
THAT STEAMER IROQUOIS WILL BE SUNK.
REFERENCE TO ATHENIA.
By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright. (Received This Day. 1.0 p.m.) NEW YORK, October 5. The Associated Press of America Washington correspondent says it is officially stated from the White House that. Admiral Bander, head of the German Navy, informed the United States that the American steamship Iroquois, carrying Americans from Europe. would be sunk when near the American east coast. Before issuing -the statement, the White House Secretary said the matter had been fully discussed by Cabinet and it had been decided that the facts should be made public. He added that Admiral Raeder advised that the sinking would be accomplished through a repetition of the circumstances marking the loss of the Athenia. Coastguard vessels and Navy patrols are meeting the Iroquois at sea and accompanying her to port. Her master has been advised by wireless and asked to make the most careful search for explosives. Britain and France have also been advised.
A wireless report detailing the foregoing news adds that American officials state that it cannot be imagined that any French or British ships could do such a thing as the report suggests. The Iroquois is one of the ships specially chartered to convey American refugees from Europe to the United States.
