FISHING SEASON
PLENTY OF TROUT IN RIVERS. DISTRIBUTION OF FRY UNDER WAY. Although no big baskets of fish have been reported so far, anglers state that there are plenty cf trout in the rivers of the Waiijarapa, especially in the Mangatainoka and Makakahi. Catches include at least one of. nine fish from the Makakahi and others of five and six. All the fish, however, appear to be’ in good condition. It is stated that the weather is still rather cold for fly fishing and in consequence the fish are keeping to the bottom of the rivers. As a result minnow fishers are having more success at present. Worm fishers in the Ruamahanga have been rewarded with baskets of five or six. Fly fishermen are looking forward to better results when the snow disappears from the ranges and warmer weather sets in. The indications are that the season will be quite a good one. Activities at the Masterton Fish Hatcheries are in full swing. The big task of liberating one and a half million fry is now in hand and it is not expected to be completed for another six weeks at least. Ova are still being received at the Hatchery. »
