Recent visitors at the Masterton Fish Hatcheries were Viscount Galway and Lady Galway. Their Excellencies were much impressed with the work of the Hatcheries.
The Mayor of Westport, Mr J. Kilkenny, resigned office yesterday, giving pressure of business as his reason.
The condition of Mr C. J. Dillon, of Eketahuna, who is a patient in the Masterton Hospital, is reported to be showing some improvement. Messrs H. E. Allison (Palmerston North). W. H. Young (Wellington) and C. C. Bushby (Hawke’s Bay) are among guests staying at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Masterton.
Dr C. C. McCullough, Fort William, Canada, an eminent surgeon, and a former president of Rotary International, arrived at Wellington from Auckland yesterday. Dr C. E. Hercus, dean of the Otago Medical Faculty, has returned after an extended tour of the United States of America, Great Britain and the Continent.
Pilot Officer M. A. Poulton. who was reported missing by the Air Ministry, London, has now been located in a French hospital slightly wounded. This information has been received by his brother, Mr A. D. Poulton, who is in training at the Wigram Aerodrome. Mr C. P. Agar, formerly vice-chair-man of the board of directors of the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association of Canterbury, Ltd., has been appointed chairman, and Mr F. E. Jones vice-chairman. Mr Arnaud McKeller, who resigned from the chair at the annual meeting, has been elected to the executive with Messrs C. G. Jarman and S. P. Godfrey.
The Rev C. H. Ritchie, rector of St John the Evangelist Episcopal Church, Edinburgh, and Sandford Canon in the Cathedral Church of St Mary, Edinburgh, has been appointed Archdeacon of Northumberland and Canon of Newcastle Cathedral, and the appointment has been approved by the King. Canon Ritchie is a native of New Zealand, where he spent the first 20 years of.his life.
i The staff of Messrs C. E. Daniell, {Ltd., assembled recently to bid farefwell to Mr Victor Braggins, who has accepted a position with the Royal Air Force at Wigram Aerodrome as carpenter. On behalf of the staff he was presented with a fountain' pen and knife. Mr A. Daniell also personally presented him with a handsome wristlet watch. Early this week a large party of friends met at the house of Mr C. Braggins to bid farewell to the guest of honoui' and his health was drunk, sincere wishes being extended to him for future success.
Sergeant C. A. Newland, a young N.C.O. from Masterton. who left with others for Burnham military camp recently, is a great grandson of the late Mr W. T. Robin, who, as a % young man, served on her Majesty’s ships Orion, Sybil and Excellent. In the year 1857 he fought in the China war, winning a medal with two clasps; Canton and Fatshan. Sergeant Newland’s grandfather, the late Mr L. Rees, fought in the Maori War and won a medal with a bar for bravery at Gate Pah. As Sergeant Newland has already served 12 years in the Territorials in peace time, he has followed in the footsteps of his forbears in his service to his King and Country. Mr W. Marshall has been appointed to the office of branch manager for the Dominion Life Assurance Office ol New Zealand, Limited, for the whole of the Wairarapa. During Mr Marshall’s previous sojourn as manager for this district, he took a keen interest in various sports activities and was well and popularly known. The news of his return to the Wairarapa has been well’ received among clients of the company. Since Mr Marshall’s previous residence in the Wairarapa, he has held several important positions with the Dornin-/ ion Life Office and now. for private reasons he had returned to the Wairarapa. Mr Marshall succeeds Mr C. H Doughty, who has been appointed on promotion to the office of manager of the company’s Palmerston North branch.
