PERSONAL

Guests at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Masterton, include Messrs W. R. Ferriss, D. G. Campbell, N. D. Rankin (Wellington) and Deria (Hastings). Mr J. Corry, of Napier, and formerly of Masterton, who will go into comp with the military forces at Ngaruawahia on Wednesday was a visitor to Masterton during the weekend. Messrs E. Franklin, J. Ronald, T. McPherson, H. Strange-Muir, A. J. Edey, and J. Thompson (Wellington) are staying at the Hotel Midland, Masterton.

At the conclusion of play at the Mahunga golf links on Saturday, the club captain, Mr I. I. McGregor, on behalf of members, farewelled Messrs A. Friend, A. Welphy, H. Hill and R. Richards, who are going into camp this week. Mr McGregor wished them good luck, au revoir and God speed, stating that he was sure they would uphold the British flag as well as they had the Mahunga flag. He announced that all members of the club absent on active service would enjoy free membership of the club until they returned. Mr W. L. Free also spoke on behalf of club members. It was stated that another foui' members would be leaving in later drafts.

The sudden death on Saturday of Mr Claude W. Charlsworth removes a prominent figure from the commercial life of Wellington. Mr Charlsworth, who was 52 years of age, was a son of Mr W. S. Charlsworth, a wellknown surveyor in the early days ol New Zealand's history. He was born in Christchurch, but at an early age was taken by his parents to Tasmania, where he was educated. As a young man he returned to New Zealand, and lived for some years in Auckland where he became prominent in sport. He subsequenty joined the staff oi Dymock, Mac Shane and Sclanders, Wellington, retiring from this firm when he was appointed secretary of the Vacuum Oil Company Pty., Ltd. During the Great War he was a staff sergeant in the New Zealand Army Pay Corps, and served on both the hospital ships Marama and Maheno. Mr Charlsworth was in his-young days an active footballer, golfer and cricketer.
