Frosts in Masterton. A frost of 6.4 degrees was registered in Masterton yesterday morning, and 2.7 degrees this morning. First Offender Convicted. On a charge of drunkenness, a first offender was convicted and ordered to pay expenses, amounting to £1 2s 6d, by Mr A. D. Low, J.P., in the Master, ton S.M. Court this morning. Vital Statistics. The vital statistics for Masterton for last month, with figures for September, 1938, in parentheses, are as follow: — Deaths 14 (17); marriages 22 (7); births, 28 (22). Body Found, In River. The body of George Sinclair Cameron was found in the Wanganui River, at Castlecliff on Saturday afternoon. Mr Cameron, who was 75 years of age, had been missing from his home since September 8. i Railway Crossing Smash. On Saturday a train collided with a truck driven by Mr A. Powell, Levin, on a Levin railway crossing. Mr Powell was admitted to the Palmerston North Hospital suffering from concussion and abrasions. Disloyal Leaflets. On a recent night leaflets declared to be of a disloyal and seditous character were scattered in Eketahuna, much to the indignation of the population of the town. The police are endeavouring to trace the persons responsible. Drivers’ Licenses. The Masterton Borough Council issued 26 drivers’ licenses in September, bringing the total issued this year to 2199 licenses. The Masterton County Council issued 17 drivers’ licenses last month bringing the total issued to date to 1224 licenses. Combined Dance. The Masterton-Kiatere .Harrier Clubs’ combined dance held in the Masonic Hall on Saturday night was an outstanding success. Mr J. J. Hunter capably acted as M.C. Pool’s Blue River' Dance Band provided the music. The combined ladies’ committee was in charge of the suppei' arrangements.

Chimney Fire. i The Masterton Fire Brigade was called out on Saturday night to a chimney fire in Chilton Buildings, on the corner of King and Chapel streets. The alarm was given at 8.47 o'clock from a street box and two engines turned out.

Lamb Competition Cancelled. Advice has been received Mr H. S. M. Quikley (Dannevirke) from the Meat Producers' Board that, because of the war, the board has decided to cancel the district lamb competition this year. The Dannevirke Agricultural and Pastoral Association had arrangements in hand for a' greatly increased entry this year. East School Dance.

The East School dance on Saturday night was favoured with a good attendance, and a most enjoyable time was spent by those present. Dance music was provided by Mr J. West, and extras were played by Mr H. Hood. The winners of the Monte Carlo were Miss Fitzwater and Mr L. Adams. The duties of M..C. were ably carried out by Mr S. V. Ihaka, and an excellent supper was supplied by the ladies’ committee. These popular dances will be continued fortnightly. An Enthusiastic Company.

After the parade on Sufiday afternoon, members of C Company Hawke’s Bay Regiment, were briefly addressed by Major C. J. Williams, commanding officer. Major Williams exl pressed his appreciation of the keen i enthusiasm C Company had shown in its work, and urged the men to see that the ranks were kept filled as men left on active service. Major Williams stated that as he was leaving Masterton, Captain Fowler would take over the command. Company-Sergeant Major J. K. Welch dismissed the company.

The Commissioner of Taxes draws the attention of taxpayers to the notification appearing in today’s issue that the due date of payment of land-tax for the current year is on Tuesday. October 1.7, and that the demands will be posted on <?r about October 10.
