PARK LILY PONDS
NEW AREA GREATLY ADMIRED. AN EFFECTIVE ARRANGEMENT. The rearrangement of the area round the fountain in the Park has met with general approval and when autumn planting is completed and the plants have become established, the newlyconstructed lily ponds will have a fine setting and will provide an interesting approach to the Fernery. It is of general interest to note that the fountain, which was presented to the town by the late Mr Joseph Renall when he was Mayor, has been remodelled and the surroundings converted into a large lily pond. The central pillar has been ornamented by placing around its base a rockery made out of pieces of the old millstone which the late Mr A. W. Renall used in his mill for the grinding of wheat in the early days of Masterton. White lilies have been planted in the fountain pond. Around the fountain a series of rockeries and built-up look-out points enhance the bqauty of the surroundings and the smaller tubs are awaiting the. arrival of the' lilies, which are choice named varieties and include pink, yellow- bronze, red and blue shades. The spring planting of ornamental plants in the area has been completed, variegated New Zealand flax, Mexican aloes and agopanthus being prominent. The area has been laid out under the direction of Messrs L. Robinson (Masterton Beautifying Society), H. E. Gardner (Park Committe, Masterton Borough Council) and H. Sturgeon (Park Custodian).
