WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT TE ORE ORE. COMPETITION WINNERS. At the monthly meeting of the Te Ore Ore Women’s Institute Mrs Fouhy (president) welcomed visitors and a good attendance of members. Apologies for absence owing to illness were received from Mrs Percy, Mrs Morriss, Mrs M. Haeata, Mrs Karaitiaria, Mrs West and her two daughters. The meeting opened with the recital of the prayer for peace, the singing of the “Ode to Friendship,” and the reading of “The Aspiration.” Mesdames Brown, Kerney -and McLauchlan were appointed a committee to supervise the potato competition. Application for a class of dramatic tuition at the Te Ore Ore school was to be sent to the secretary of the Wairarapa Co-ordinating Committee of Women’s Institute and Women’s Division. Mesdames Fouhy, Brunton, McDonald and McLachlan were appointed a sub-committee to deal with the questionnaire on evacuation. This will be completed as soon as possible and details sent to the secretary of the Wairarapa Federal on of Women’s institutes. Mrs Whittaker,, of Masterton, then gave a much appreciated demonstration of hair-pin work. On display the demonstrator had a crochet cushion cbver, some seed work, and hand made leather gloves, all of which she has arranged to demonstrate at later meetings. Supper was served by the hostesses Mesdames Dring, Brown and Admore, during the course of which a roll call —“A thing I detest”—was taken. The response caused much merriment. Mrs Brunton conducted an interesting game in the form of a .competition —‘Towns in New Zealand’—which was won by Mrs Dagg and Mrs Fouhy. Mrs J. Haeata was second, Mrs Nini and Miss Bliss third. Mrs J. Haeata was the winner of the “Wandering Shilling.” Mrs Whittaker judged the monthly competitions the results of which were as follow:—Best plain sponge cake, Mrs McLachlan, 1; Mrs Brunton, 2; Mrs Simpson 3. Best flower, Mrs McLachlan, 1; Mrs Fouhy 2; Mrs McDonald, 3. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mrs Whittaker for her help at the meeting. A pleasant gathering concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.
