PONGAROA

COUNTY AFFAIRS MEETING OF COUNCIL. ("Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Akitio County Council there were present: Councillors C. P. Hunter (chairman), E. R. Ellingham, D. R. Hall, L. Ballantyne. T. A. Yeoman. A. W. Ruskell, D. W. Gray. An application from J. Herbert, Pongaroa, to erect two chains of fence alongside the road on his property was granted.

A letter was received from the Department of Lands and Survey advising that Mr McCarthy held a temporary tenancy of Section 29, block 111. Puketoi —lt was decided to write to the Department, saying that the section should .be fenced or else the temporary tenancy would be terminated. The ranger in ■ his monthly report stated that he had impounded 99 head of cattle, four horses and one donkey, the fees amounting to £5 4s.

The clerk stated that he had been advised that the plans for the Centennial gateway at, the ißeserve hadbeen approved. Councillors Yeoman and Ruskell'and Mr Eunson were appointed a committee to continue with the.. Centennial gate and to arrange sites for tree-planting. The Lands Department wrote stating that the land in the bend of the stream past the pound was included in a temporary lease held by County Council. The clerk was instructed to write to the Department stating that the county no longer required this section, and suggesting that it could be vested in the Reserve. In connection with the Scenic Reserve Centennial' scheme, Councillor Yeoman reported that officers of the Land and Forestry Department had visited Pongaroa, and were prepared to recommend that the county should acquire the three sections required to convert the Domain into a scenic reserve. The Forestry Department, he stated, would not allow them to remove the dying timber from the reserve as it was considered this would cause too much damage.
