HONG KONG CRISIS
— ■ — EASED BY EUROPEAN UPHEAVAL. LETTER FROM FORMER RESIDENT OF MASTERTON. Writing from Hong Kong, under date August 27, to a friend in Masterton, a Chinaman who was born in Masterton and lived here for many years, 'but who is now a resident of Saigon (French Indo-China), states that owing to the Japanese campaign in China “the people of Hong Kong passed through a terrible crisis, until Hitler exploded a bomb among the Japanese with his pact with Russia. Japan is now in a quandry and does not know which way to turn to secure for herself the best advantage. Their antiBritish agitation has died down considerably and if the Russians start in the north the Japanese troops will never leave China alive. The Japanese have asked for it and now they have got it. China is jubilant over the si-* Illation which has arisen. The Japanese were on the borders of Hong Kong creating an anxious time for those residing in the ancient city, but the pact between Germany and the Soviet —between their best friend and their bitterest enemy —has brought about a most interesting situation which may have far-reaching consequences."
