Mr Letham, of Napier, is on a visit to Masterton, and is staying at the Hotel Midland.

Mr D. A. Pickering, of Masterton, was taken to Wellington today where he will enter the Lewisham Hospital to undergo an operation.

Messrs Stubbs, Johnston, McCaskill, and McLure, of the Wellington Education Board, are visiting Masterton, and are staying at the Empire Hotel. • Guests at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Masterton, include Messrs H. E. Ellison. J. S. Jenkinson (Palmerston North)' and H. A. Jenkins (Wellington).

The appointment of Mi’ A. E. Mabin, of Wellington, as president and of Mr David Allan, also of Wellington, as vice-president, of the New Zealand Wool Brokers’ Association, was announced today.

The funeral of the late Miss Nora Carrick took place in Wellington on Sunday. The services at the Basillica of the Sacred Heart, Hill Street, and the Karori Cemetery were conducted by the Rev. Father Kelly. The interment was private. The pall-beaiers were - Messrs J. A. Kerslake (Masterton), Russell, Sent., M. Russell and G. Russell (Wellington).

Advice from the Atr Ministry that his son, Pilot Officer Arthur William Mack, had been interned in Belgium, after a forced landing on Saturday, has been received by Mr C. W. Mack, Wellington. Pilot Officer Mack is well known in Wellington. He attended Wellington College and afterward played Rugby and cricket for the College Old Boys’ Club and was a member of the Star Boating Club. After receiving' flying training at Rongotai as a member of the Wellington Aero Club, he went to England to join the R.A.F. about two years ago, and, according to the latest advices from him, he' was a member of a heavy bomber squadron.

The death has occurred of Mrs A. E. Armitage, a well-known Auckland resident, at the age of 76. Mrs Armitage was born Hit Newfoundland, -where her father, the Rev J. Waterhouse, was a Methodist missionary. When she was 10 years old Mrs Armitage returned to England with her father, and completed her education at a Methodist girls’ college. She came to New Zealand as a young woman, and joined the staff of the Invercargill Girls’ High School. In 1894 she married Mr J. Armitage, and after living in Kaiapoi and Wellington, went to Auckland. Mrs Armitage was prominently associated with many of the activities of the Methodist Church. She is survived by two daughters. Her only son was killed in the Great War. Advice was received at Hastings yesterday from Great Britain by Mr and Mrs P. Drummond, Puketapu, that their only son, Flying Officer John Drummond, was killed on Septernber 9 while engaged in Royal .Air Force duties. This is Hawke’s Bay’s first war casualty. Flying Officer Drummond, who was 25 years of age, left in June for England to join the R.A.F., having previously been employed in the Dannevirke district. A patrol-leader in the Puketapu troop of Boy Scouts, he went to England to attend the international jamboree held in 1929. After beginning his education at Puke tapu school he went' to Napier Boys’ High School, where he showed splendid qualities, both in scholastic and athletic attainments. The death has occurred at Picton of Mrs Elizabeth Ferguson at the age of 92 years. Deceased, who was popularly known as “the grand old lady of Picton,” lived in New Zealand for 71 years, having arrived at Auckland in 1868. Mr and Mrs Ferguson first settled in Napier, where they stayed for eleven years, afterwards removing to Waipawa, settling there for 41 years. They wene to Picton 19 years ago, where they have resided ever since. The members of the family arc: Mr Edmund Ferguson (Sydney), Alfred (French Pass), Frank (Aniseed), James (California), Mrs J. Oakenfull (Masterton), Mrs Gerald Sutton (Picton), Mrs Jack Corskie (Blenheim) and Mrs J. A. Fuller (Picton). Ten grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren are also left. At the invitation of Mr and Mrs W. M. Crystall, of Palmerston North and formerly of Masterton, many friends, including visitors from Wellington, Masterton, Dannevirke and Apiti, assembled at the Jade ballroom on Saturday evening, the occasion marking the coming-of-age of their son William. A delicious savoury supper was served and various toasts were honoured, Mr L. Barber, of Masterton. proposing that of the guest of the evening, which was enthusiastically honoured. In a very happy speech, Mr Crystall presented his son with the traditional gold key signed by those present, reminding him of his new responsibilities. Mr William Crystall returned thanks'lor the good wishes and kindly remarks, also the gifts that had been showered upon him and to his parents for the wonderful party. Mr McKay (Apiti) proposed the toast to Mr and Mrs Crystall and Mr Marsack 'Masterton) returned thanks on behalf of the youthful guests for the hospitality enjoyed.
