RHODES SCHOLARS
TWO NEW ZEALANDERS ON WAY TO OXFORD. POSITION MADE UNCERTAIN BY WAR. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. When the war broke out, the authorities at Oxford University cabled New Zealand to the effect that Rhodes Scholarships would be suspended, but when they heard that New Zealand's pair, Messrs Berendsen and Weston, were already on their way Home, a further cable was sent leaving it to the scholars, or their parents, to determine whether they proceeded or returned to New Zealand. If a decision is made to complete the voyage, the authorities at Oxford will look after the scholars. In the meantime, communication is being established with the two scholars as fast as circumstances will allow, but as yet it is not known definitely whether they will be returning or not. There is similar uncertainty about the holders of other scholarships at Cambridge, who recently left for England.
