KAITUNA-FERNRIDGE
SIXTH BIRTHDAY PARTY. (“Times-Age” Special ) Seventy members from various institutes were present at the sixth birthday party of the Kaituna-Fernside Women’s Institute, held in the Kaituna Hall. As each member of the institutes entered the hall they were handed a spray of flowers by the vice-presidents, Mesdames J. Stempa and Alan Keir. The meeting opened with the Creed and prayer for peace. The following gave items: Mesdames Carstens and Morton, vocal solos; humorous recitations by Miss Jean Douglas and a very humorous play by the members of the Carterton Women’s Institute, called “The Imposter.” The play, which was the feature of the programme, was ably presented. Two competitions were held, the winners being Mrs Knutson and Miss D. Laing, respectively. , Afternoon tea was then service by the members of the Institute and an excellent birthday cake, made by Mrs R. Taylforth and handsomely decorated by Mrs J. Shaw, was the centre of attraction. The candles were lit by Mrs Smith, the oldest member, and extinguished by the youngest member, Miss P. Welch. Mrs McKay was then asked to cut the cake. Mrs J. Welsh (president) then presented the points prizes for the year, the winners being: Seniors, Mrs Stempa 1, Mrs Keir 2; juniors, Miss L. Pain 1, Mrs Alan Keir 2. Other competitions resulted: Flowers, Mrs Scharnweber 1, Mrs Shaw and Mrs Pike 2; potato competition, Mrs Scharnweber 1.
An enjoyable gathering closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
