Among those staying at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Masterton, are Messrs L. J. Dunblepon, W. Turner (Nelson) and Dawson (Palmerston North). The Mayor of Auckland, Sir Ernest Davis, has arranged a civic reception for the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W Nash, on his arrival in that city from England. The combined staff of Messrs C. E. Daniell Ltd. met yesterday afternoon to make a presentation to Mr G. E. Wainscott in view of his approaching marriage. Mr G. J. Norris, on behalf of the staff, presented Mr Wainscott with a handsome brass fire screen and log box. Mr Wainscott returned thanks. Guests at the Hotel Midland, Masterton, include Messrs J. Wells, D. C. Johnston. A. L. Spackman, T. Ranson, L. Holmes, J. Reeves, J. A. Carter, J. Wilkey (Wellington); S. Bullick. A. BlackmoreC Hastings); S. Eagle, J. Olliver (Auckland), and D. Bryan (Christchurch). According to a Press Association telegram from Blenheim, the death has occurred of Captain Edward Graham, aged 82, who retired in 1931 after nearly 50 years’ service with the Anchor Shipping Company, for which he commanded at different times for 33 years the steamers Kennedy, Waverley, Charles Edward. Kaitoa, Waimea. Regulus, and T-itoki. Opportunity was taken yesterday afternoon by the field staff of the A.M.P. Society, Masterton, to farewell Mr A. M. Fanthorpe, who has been transferred to Inglewood. In making a presentation of a fountain pen, Mr W. Fleming expressed on behalf of the staff the hope that Mr Fanthorpe would prosper in his new. environment. Mr Fanthorpe suitably replied. Mr Frank Higginson, of Whangarei, aged 73 years, died suddenly on the Whangarei golf links on Tuesday. Mr Higginson was born at Alexander, now Pirongia, in the Waikato, his parents having settled in that district in 1863. His parents remained at their home with their family through the Maori wars. After leaving school, Mr Higginson entered the teaching profession. The death has occurred at Invercargill of Mr T. A. Langford, a wellknown horseman of a few seasons back and a member of one of the bestknown sporting families in New Zealand. For some time, Mr Langford had not kept the best of health, but his death at the age of 31 years is deeply regretted. Mr Langford was twin brother of the successful jumping rider W. V. Langford, who recently announced his retirement from race riding. The death has occurred of Raita Tukia, widow of the late Takarangi Mete King!, chief of the Putiki tribe, aged 96 years. Mrs Takarangi was a leading figure in the activities of Putiki settlement and knew Wanganui from its infancy. The Maori wars were clearly remembered by Mrs Takarangi. and she had vivid recollections of the great preparations made in Wanganui to defend the town against the raiding Hau Haus, who were beaten at the historic battle of Moatua. The death occurred in Auckland yesterday, after an illness of several months, of Colonel Charles Robert Spragg, aged 59 years, states a Press Association message. Till his retirement last year he was a prominent territorial officer. He was well known as a breeder of Jersey cattle and was judge at many shows till the Great War. He was also Government meat inspector in the Gisborne district. He saw service in the Boer- War and in the Great War, and after his return to New Zealand served ■ in the Territorial Army. Colonel Spragg was one of the four senior officers of the Territorial Force who issued a manifesto in May last criticising the policy enunciated by the Minister of Defence, Mr Jones, as inadequate. This lead to the posting of the four colonels to the retired list, and to a long controversy, in which many organisations participated. He is survived by his wife, son and daughter.
