PARK IMPROVEMENTS

” WATER-LILY PONDS AROUND THE FOUNTAIN. WORK AT PRESENT UNDER WAY. Further improvements at present being carried out In Masterton Park will, when completed, add to the beauty and attractions of this notable open space. An area around the fountain is being Rearranged in water lily ponds and rockeries and the effect promises to be particularly pleasing. The fountain is being made more or less the centre of the layout and is to be remodelled. The base of the fountain, 15ft. across, is to be macadamised and the pond devoted to the growth of white lilies. Arranged around the fountain in artistic groupings are six concrete tubs 3ft. 6in. in diameter and three 18 inches across. These tubs are all being surrounded by rocks and several raised lookout points are also being constructed, so that visitors may be able to obtain a better view of the lilies. In the six large tubs it is hoped to establish cream, yellow and pink water lilies and the three smaller ones will contain respectively a red, blue and bronze lily. All the water-lilies will be choice varieties. Several choice plants are being planted here and there among the rocks to enhance the general beauty of the surroundings. When completed, the improvements should prove a decided acquisition to the Park.
