CHESS
TOURNEY AT PALMERSTON NORTH. WELLINGTON BEAT PROVINCE. The annual double-round Chess tourney between Wellington and the province, which was inaugurated three years ago. was held at Palmerston North on Saturday. This was the fourth tourney of the series, the position being that Wellington had won the first by 40 games to 13. and the Province had won the next two 29/22 and 32/19 respectively. Thus Wellington had to win this year to even the rubber. This they did. sending up a particularly strong team. They had a decisive victory, the final scores being Wellington 44. Province 16. Masterton was represented at the tourney for the first time since its inception by two local players. Messrs C. Clemas and E. A. Heyder, who played for Province. Other players came from Hastings. Dannevirke. Wanganui and Woodville, with Palmerston North contributing 17 competitors.
A warm welcome was extended to all by Mr Christensen, president of the Palmerston North Chess Club. Mr Goldsmith, president of the New Zea land Chess Association and Mr Kelling. president of the Wellington Chess Club, replied. Tribute was paid to the secretaries of the two teams. Mr R. N. Yorke, Palmerston North, and Mr J. L. Hardy, Wellington, for the splendid manner in which the tourney was managed. The arrangements were described as a good job of work well done. Masterton Club Games. The Masterton Club held its weekly meeting last evening, the ladder game scores being as follow: —M. Cleghorn 0. C. Clemas. 1; E. A. Heyder, 1; N. Samont. 0; A. E. Clemas. 1; R.
