THREE-FOOT LATHE

MADE AT WAIRARAPA COLLEGE. FOR CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION. A three-foot lathe which has been made at Wairarapa College and is to be displayed at the Centennial Exhibition. is at present on view in the window of Messrs C. E. Daniell Ltd., Queen Street. It is most attractively finished and as an example of workmanship provides impressive evidence of the excellence of the training the students of the college are receiving in the engineering course. Practically all the boys in the day class and many of the evening students in the engineering class have taken some part in the manufacture of the lathe. It is of particular interest to note that every part of the lathe, oven to the screws, was made at the College, and incidentally, the material used was melted down from an old gas stove and two cylinder blocks. Patterns were made in wood and all casting was done at the College. Some indication of the exactitude required is given when it is known that certain vital parts of the lathe have to'be correct to one-thousandth part of an inch. The lathe has taken about a year to make. As it will be on view in the window for only a day or two persons interested are advised to take an early opportunity of inspecting it.
