YEARLING TROUT
NOTABLE SUCCESS ACHIEVED AT HATCHERY. THIRTY-TWO THOUSAND READY FOR LIBERATION. The rearing of brown trout yearlings nt the Masterton Fish Hatcheries has been remarkably successful. As many’ as 32.000 yearlings are at present accommodated in the new hundred foot pond constructed by local anglers and officially opened by Sir William Perry a year ago. Some of the fish in this pond have grown to a length of eight to ten inches and the average is about 4£ or five inches. All these yearlings will be liberated in northern Wairarapa rivers, principally the Ruamahanga. The North Wairarapa Committee of the Acclimatisation Society' invite all donors of cash, material or labour for the building of the pond and all anglers to inspect the fish at the Hatcheries tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. Sir William Perry will be among those present. As the task of liberating such a large number of fish will bo a big one. involving a considerable amount of labour, anglers are to bo requested to give their assistance. It is hoped to start liberation next week. Six thousand yearlings from the smaller pond have already been turned out in Wairarapa rivers. Members of the Council of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society and Professor Hobbs, of the Department of Scientific and industrial Research, visited the hatcheries today.
