RAILWAYS NURSERY

AVAILABLE ONLY TO TRAIN

TRAVELLERS.

When a recent letter from a correspondent, complaining that non-rail-way users were not allowed to place their children in the nursery at the Wellington Railway Station, was referred to the Railways Department, it was stated by the Railways Publicity Manager (Mr G. G. Stewart) that the Wellington Railway Station Nursery has now been open for over two years, during which time 6.761 children have been entrusted to the care of the staff by train travellers. “At no, time,’’ Mr Stewart added, “was the use of the nursery intended or contemplated for other than railway passengers. At the time of opening and on many occasions since, the nursery service available to train passengers has been advertised. Although not specifically mentioned in the advertisement to which your correspondent refers, the provision of a railway nursery is obviously an additional inducement' to use the railways and would be so understood by the average person. “It is not feasible to cater for other than train passengers at the Wellington Station nursery, and any inconvenience occasioned your correspondent on this account is regretted. The only exceptions arc the Eastbourne ferry passengers, who are unable to travel by train."
