GAMING CHARGE
PROSECUTION IN FEATHERSTON. FINE OF £45 IMPOSED. - (“Times-Age” Special.) A fine of £45 and 10s .costs was imposed on W. E. Jeffrey by Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., in the Featherston Magistrate's Court this morning when the former appeared on a charge of using his premises in Fox Street. Featherston, as a common gaming house. Jeffrey pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant W. Kane who represented the police, stated that Jeffrey owned a hairdressers and tobacconists' saloon in Fox Street and for some time had been indulging in bookmaking. On the afternoon of Saturday. August 12, in company with Constable C. H. Reardon, he visited Jeffrey’s saloon and informed him of the nature of the visit. “Jeffrey was quite open and frank about the whole matter and gave no trouble whatsoever." said DetectiveSergeant Kane. “His books showed that the amount of betting done up to that time amounted to £27. Jeffrey is a first offender.”
Mr J. Wilson, who appeared on behalf of defendant, said that a Grand National meeting was being held on the day of the visit and the betting disclosed that day was higher than was usually the case.
