FALL OVER CLIFF
GIRL LIES ON BEACH FOR 36 HOURS. NOW MAKING GOOD RECOVERY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) BLENHEIM, This Day. Falling over a hundred-foot cliff on the Kaikoura Peninsula, . Nurse 0. Newtpn, aged 17, a probationer at the Kaikoura hospital, remained for a period of about 36 hours unconscious on the beach before she was discovered. Nurse Newton left the hospital on Tuesday afternoon to go for a walk along the coast and was looking over the cliff when she became dizzy and fell. Some growth on the cliff face broke her fall, but she was rendered unconscious by a blow on her head, finally coming to rest on the shore just above high-water mark. Searches for the missing girl were unsuccessful until Thursday morning, when two other nurses. Misses McCombs and Russell saw her from the top of the cliff. Access to the beach was possible only by a launch, in which the injured nurse was conveyed to a wharf. Under treatment at the hospital Nurse Newton recovered consciousness ’and was able to give an account of the accident. She is now making a remarkably rapid recovery. Miss Newton, who belongs to Christchurch, entered for training at the Kaikoura Hospital three months ago.
