GOLF NOTES

RIVERSIDE CLUB ACTIVITIES

COMMENT ON RECENT PLAY

PRESIDENT'S TROPHY CONTEST.

By "Long Drive.”

The members of the Riverside Golf Club played the second qualifying round for the President’s trophy during the weekend. As the day turned out rather cold, the cards handed in were not as good as usual.

F. E. Wells, the favourite for the junior championship played a very steady round, and returned a card of 70 net. This score could easilj- have been reduced much lower as no fewer than five “sixes” appear on his card. The highlight of this player’s round was a 4 on Barr’s.

M. Finlayson has been improving every week. On Saturday he handed in a card of 71 net., playing too, two strokes above his handicap. The best card handed in during the I weekend was that of O. Henshilwood, 68 net. After beginning unsteadily, he settled down and played one stroke below his handicap of 14, A player who should have returned a much better card was G. Jones, as no fewer than twelve "fives" appeared on his card. His best hole was a

"birdie 3” on the Donga. The downfall of F. Pool was his putting. This player hits a very long ball off the tees and was very accurate with his irons, but often toox more than the regulation two putts on the greens. S. L. Pye has been improving over the last few weeks and on Saturday he returned a card of 69 net.

By playing steadily W. G. Rew returned his usual card of 70 net. This competitor was rather unlucky to be off his game during the qualifying rounds for the championship, as he is one of the most consistent players in the club.

A member who has just returned to form is F. Shearer. “Long Drive” hopes he can keep it up and annex the intermediate championship this year, as he has been a trier for many years.

A match that will be followed with interest in the first round of the Intermediate championship is that between R. Hatch and R. Wearne. Both these players are on the same handicap, and a good game is certain. One of the contestants has been around the links every day this week and says he is in great form. During the weekend J. C. Skeet played and defeated D. Carruthers in the first round of the senior championship.

In the Intermediate championship J. Wakelin eliminated A. Clarkson and in the Junior event R. Castles defeated H. Clarkson. As several matches in the “Bobbin” singles competition have to be played (to complete the third round), the players concerned are reminded that these games must be played this weekend or be forfeited.
