RACING DESCRIBED
PADISHAH'S FINE EFFORT.
Hunt Cup Steeplechase.
Only five runners faced the starter in the Hunt Cup Steeplechase, El Caballo and Glenvane being scratched. At the second fence of the stand double Tomcat, Red Terror and Panara fell leaving only Bridegroom and Night Wind in the race. Bridegroom jumped splendidly to win easily. Night Wind had several shaky jumps. Tomcat and Red Terror set off again to compete for third money, which ’was gained by Tomcat who finished about 41 minutes behind the winner.
Sumner Handicap.
Windsor Chief, who started in this event as the public's third fancy, finished well to gain first money after being well placed throughout the race. Near k the finish Dranoel made a bold bid but only managed to fill third position. Wagner ran a solid race at the end, and appears to be returning to form. Little Robin and Brilliant Boa shaped nicely but were never dangerous.
Beaufort Steeplechase.
Favourite on both machines Slayer was well ridden by A. Jenkins to gain the decision in the Beaufort Steeplechase. Hanover, who filled second position, again gave a brilliant display of jumping and was just worn down over the last 60 yards. Both El Caballo and Gold Wren ran fair races. Hanover led over the first fence and was still in front as they jumped the second to last one. Into the straight the order was Hanover, Gold Wren, Slayer and El Caballo. At the last jump Hanover had the lead by two lengths from Slayer but the latter wore the opposition down. Eleven lengths away came the very tired Gold Wren followed by El Caballo with Manawatu tailing the field.
Woolston Handicap.
With W. J. Broughton up.Kaiwaka scored in the Woolston Handicap but he was hard ridden to gain the decision from Boloyna who made a great effort to win all the way. After being in a handy position throughout Rex Maitland made a bold showing to fill third place. Gay Hunting ran on better than usual, while Flame Queen and Gold Salute were running at the finish. Gold Salute should improve with a race or two more. Ohmaha went well until reaching the straight, but then tired over the last furlong. Kaiwaka and Boloyna were away to a good start and as they turned into the home stretch Boloyna led the way from Kaiwaka. A furlong to go saw Kaiwaka draw level with Boloyna and in a great finish scored by a short head. Grand National Hurdles.
The three best supported horses in the Grand National Hurdles filled the first three positions. The race was run at a solid pace. For the first mile Padishah was well back but as they commenced the last five furlongs he was handy. When asked to he moved up with Charade who had taken over the lead from King Rey about half a mile from home, and in spite of a strong challenge from Aussie Ra he had the race in hand from the last fence. Aussie Ra went remarkably well; so did the top weight Charade who was onlybeaten near the end. This was the second successive win in the race for A. E. Ellis and Padishah. Ellis also won on Penury Rose in 1925 and on Wharncliffe in 1927. Spreydon Hurdles. Out of the seven runners only four completed the course in the Spreydon Hurdles. Second favourite Begorrah gave A. Jenkins his third winning ride of the day. Begorrah was left in the lead after Round Score fell five furlongs from the post and he had an easy win over Tutor who had tailed oft’ most of the way and made up a lot of ground over the concluding stages. Jewish Lad ran a fair race, but ’after going a little over a mile McHeath faded. Islington Handicap. A thrilling finish was provided in the Islington Handicap when Tidewaiter. Lowenberg and Settlement dead-heated for first money. As the field passed the distance it looked as if Lowenberg would win. but Settlement and Tidewaiter who were well to the rear at the five furlong post camewith great runs on the outside and all three numbers were hoisted. Balmentcr and Kena made good showings. Silver Slipper. Gay Rebel and Liane . all failed to run on after being handily placed. The performances of the three dead-heaters was good and all appear to be in good form. August Handicap. A surprise victory was scored in the last race of the day by Haughty Winner who finished with an amazingburst of speed. In the Winter Cup Haughty Winner ran disappointingly. Entering the straight Haughty Winner was lying about seventh, but he came up to head Mishna who was also at good odds. Tooley Street, who filled! third berth, ran well but could not-’ cope with the first two over the final] stages. Ruling Spi failed to run on in
the straight, and Grey Honour also tired. Both Mittie and Gay Chou were running on. Strip showed up early but then faded.
