HYMN BOOK AND BIBLE

INTERESTING COMPETITIONS. AMONG METHODIST SCHOLARS. The scholars of the Masterton Methodist Sunday School met in the Methodist Hall last night to compete in a series of items based on their hymn book and the Bible. A lengthy programme was put through smoothly and delighted a good attendance of parents and friends.

At the close of the gathering complimentary reference to the work of the competitors was made by the judges, Mrs M. B. Thompson. M.A., and Miss C. McArthur, of Solway College (elocutionary and musical). Mr F. Rogers, of Wairarapa College (colouring), the Rev. F. J. Parker (Bible knowledge), and the Misses Cocker (paper-tearing). Before the programme commenced Mrs Thompson and Miss McArthur were presented with floral tributes by Mrs E. Cody, on behalf of the school. Much of the success of the evening was due to the official accompaniste, Mrs F. J. Parker.

The championships were won as follows: —Senior girls, Melva McPherson and Eileen Wiltshire (equal); senior boys, Graeme Lyttle; junior girls, Betty Conly; junior boys, Daniel Davey. The detailed results are: —Hymn solo: Girls, senior, Ngaire Marsh, 1; Ivy Saunders, 2. Junior: Noeline Birkett, 1; Kathleen Wiltshire, 2; Betty Conly, 3. Boys, senior, Ivor Perrin; junior, Daniel Davey. Hymn duet: Girls, senior, Melva McPherson ahd Ngaire Marsh; junior, Noeline Birkett and Margaret Prout, 1; Vivienne and Yvonne Day, 2; Kathleen Wiltshire and Betty Conly, 3. Boys: Senior, Ivor Perrin and Graeme Lyttle; junior, Daniel Davey and Owen Prior.

An interesting interlude in the programme was a competition in which the children tore from a piece of paper an object mentioned in the Bible. Tearing out: Nancy Lindsay, Audrey Daysh, Betty Lindsay, Betty Conly, Joan Hunt, Melva McPherson, Bryan Marriott, Eldon Peterson, Daniel Davey, Ivor Perrin, Graeme Lyttle. At the conclusion of the gathering Mr Parker complimented the superintendent, Mr J. H. Conly, the secretary, Mr A. Wellington, and other workers on the organisation and success of the function.
