THE “CHAMBERLAIN”
HAS COME TO STAY. “Chamberlain” is the rather obvious name given by designers to the delightful old-fashioned hook handle umbrellas which they are showing in London with spring suits, coats, and rain-day ensembles. Mainbocher’s umbrellas pick up the trimming of the outfit; Schiaparelli has a very daring red tartan to match revers and cuffs on a navy swagger.
Quilting —adds a dash of formality to this coat worn by Betty Grable, Paramount player. Princess lines, pale biege cameltex and matching pearl buttons stress a feminine note in the coat. Her hat is a brimmed felt with a draped trimming of biege wool crepe, matching the coat. Other accessories are black.
Betty Grable did quite a bit of professional work as a child, and as she grew older, her dancing ability brought an opportunity for her to become a member of the Fox Studio dancing chorus. After this she was intermittently under contract to Samuel Goldwyn, RKO-Radio, she danced and sang with Ted Fio Rita’s orchestra, and later with the Jay Whidden combination. She appeared in the Fred As-taire-Ginger Rogers picture, “Gay Divorcee,” and following this was given a term contract by Paramount. Betty Grable is married to Jackie Coogan, one-time famous child screen star.
