ST. ANDREW SOCIETY
GATHERING ON SATURDAY NIGHT. CONCERT ITEMS AND DANCING. The monthly gathering of the Saint Andrew Society on Saturday night was marked with the enthusiasm and enjoyment that arc invariably to be expected at gatherings of the society. The concert organiser. Mr William C. Mann, had, as usual, arranged concert items of high quality, and the large attendance entered vigorously, and with obvious delight into the various Scottish dances.
The concert programme opened with a pipe selection by Piper Billie Mackenzie Douglas, and songs were contributed by Miss Malmo (two Hebridean love lilts), Mr L. Dilnot Wales ("The Bonny Earl o’ Moray’’ and "Why Left I My Home"), and Miss Leah Johnston ('‘Mary of Argyle’ and "Annie Laurie.") Pianoforte solos by Miss N. Mulvey ("Coronach” by Edgar Barratt. and a fantasia on Scots airs) were very favourably received. The main feature of the programme was a lecturette by Mr I. 1. McGregor, in which he described his recent tour of Scotland. This was of groat interest to members, especially to those who were natives of districts touched upon by Mr McGregor. Apologies for unavoidable absence were received from Miss Mitchell ol Carterton. and Miss Miriel Hancox. both of whom were to have contributed recitations.
Music for the various Scottish dances was supplied by Pipers L. Pither. B. Beavcn and Billie Mackenzie Douglas, and was much appreciated. The gathering ended with the singing of "Auld Lang Sync" and the National Anthem. The Chief announced that a party from the society would attend a Ceilidh of the Wellington Gaelic Club on the evening of Saturday next. For this, it would be necessary for members to make their own arrangements as to transport. The next gathering of the society would be held at the Municipal Hall on Saturday. September 2, and would be open to the public. On that occasion the Manawatu Scottish Society and its band would be the guests of the society. The band expected to attend in full strength, and an excellent band it was. It had performed with great success at the recent Dominion contest at Christchurch, and had been promoted to A grade.
The Chief also referred to the recent distribution of the society's rules and bylaws, with which all members should make themselves familiar. The society’s badge appearing on the cover had been the work of an artistic young member. Mr Jock White, to whom the society's thanks were due. An apology for her inability to attend the gathering was received from Chieftauiess, Mrs R. A. Miller.
