WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

WAIRARAPA FEDERATION. SOLWAY-MANAIA BIRTHDAY. The Solway-Manaia Women’s Institute celebrated its fourth birthday on Thursday. The hall was artistically decorated with hydrangeas and yellow spring blooms. Mrs Munn (president) extended a hearty welcome to members and visitors. There were present representatives of the Wairarapa Federation, Kaituna-Fernridge, Upper Plain. Te Ore Ore, MatarawaDalefield, Carterton, Parkvale, Gladstone, Kopuaranga Institutes; Plunket Society. Crippled Children’s Society, Women's National Welfare League and Townswomen's Guild.

The birthday cake (made by a member) was much admired. The privilege of lighting the four candles fell to the oldest member, Mrs McMichael. Miss McAllister, the youngest member, extinguished them. Songs were contributed by Mrs Kerry, and recitations by Miss Douglas.

The wall competitions were won by Mrs Pearce and Mrs Catton. Mrs Carson held the lucky cup. Mrs Keir presented the prizes won during the year to Miss Russell (sewing), Mrs Woollett (cooking). Mrs Munn (flowers). Mrs McMichael (potatoes), Mrs Munn (most entries for competitions). Money boxes were given to institute babies Lois McGovern and June Sutherland.

The following ladies were presented with shoulder sprays: Mesdames Keir, Kerry, McKay. Horata, Cottle, Watson. Free, Coleman, Snowsill, Kilgour. Archer. Brazendale, Elkins, Misses Trass and Douglas. The singing of the National Anthem brought to a close a most enjoyable afternoon. The programme for September is:— Flowers: Floating bowl to be arranged in hall, time allowance three minutes. Cooking: (1) One egg chocolate sponge; (2) cheese scones. Sewing: <1) Oven cloth made from sugar bag; (2) knitted article. Roll call; “My most thrilling experience.”
