WORK ON SATURDAYS
GIRL OPERATIVES IN BOOT
FACTORIES.

Because of the shortage of female labour in the boot trade, a request has been received by the secretary of the Boot Trades Federation, Mr C. A. Watts. Auckland, from the Dunedin branch of the federation for permission for girls in factories to work on Saturdays.
Mr Watts stated that he had replied to Dunedin that, in the event of the union being unable to supply labour, and. with the consent of the workers first being obtained, the federation was agreeable that four hours might be worked on Saturdays, providing the annual overtime hours females were permitted to work were not exceeded. It was also sltitcd by Mr Watts that there was an acute shortage of female operatives in other centres, including Auckland. He could place 30 journeywomen in Auckland immediately, but unfortunately they were nut available.
