Mr C. E. Johnston, Wadcstown. who has been staying with Mr A. P. Bennett, Renall Street, Masterton, has returned to Wellington.

Mr Dobson, Weber (Hawke's Bay) and Dr Mulholland (Wellington) are on a visit to Masterton and are among guests at the Empire Hotel. The Otago Rugby Union has decided to nominate G. A. Maddison (Hawke's Bay) and A. E. McPhail (Canterbury) to represent New Zealand at the Imperial Rugby Conference in London.

Mr and Mrs J. Livingston, of Dannevirke, have been made life members of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union and the Women’s Division of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union respectively. A vote of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr C. E. Daniell was passed at yesterday’s meeting of the Wairarapa Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union, those present standing as a mark of respect. The many friends of Mr and Mrs W. J. Blake, Lansdowne, will regret to learn of the death of their youngest daughter Jean, which occurred on Saturday. The funeral took place on Monday at the Karori Cemetery. Mr F. R. Meldrum. son of Mr and Mrs F. J. Meldrum, Dunedin, has had conferred on him at the graduation ceremony of Bristol University on July 1. the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Dr Meldrum’s research in physical chemistry was carried out under the direction of Professor W. E. Gainer, F.R.S., during the tenure of the Michael Hiatt Baker Scholarship.

The death occurred in Waikato Hospital on Sunday of Mr R. G. Ewing, aged 38. He was well known in Wellington, particularly in amateur athletic and other sporting circles. He joined the Defence Department as a cadet just before the .Armistice, and was transferred to the Pensions Department early in 1920. Later that year he joined the Tourist Department. In 1937 he went to the Chateau Tongariro as stores manager. In 1938 he was transferred to Te Aroha on promotion to be manager of the departmental office and spa. From 1932 to 1935 Mr Ewing was secretary of the Kiwi Athletic Club in Wellington. In 1935 he was appointed secretary of the Wellington Centre, N.Z.A.A.A.
