PLOUGHING MATCHES
PLANNED IN WAIRARAPA. “TIMES-AGE" OFFERS TROPHY. Although they are popular in such agricultural areas as Canterbury. Marlborough. Otago and Hawke’s Bay and used to be as popular in the Wairarapa, ploughing matches, as a regular competitive feature of farming life, have not been seen in this district for a good many years past. That they could readily be organised successfully, however, was the opinion gained by a “Times-Age” representative yesterday in conversation with various people interested in farming in the Wairarapa. With a view to establishing a competition of this nature the management of the “Times-Age” decided yesterday to explore the possibilities, and if sufficient interest is indicated to donate a special challenge trophy, the conditions for which will later be decided. Mr R. H. Williams, secretary of the Masterton A. and P. Society has volunteered to write to a Hawke s Bay expert in ploughing matches and get details of the manner in which they arc conducted in that district. Later the method of actual organisation will be considered and should interest be awakened, ploughing matches will take place regularly in the Wairarapa. It will of course, be necessary to plan separate classes for horse-drawn and tractor ploughs, but that is a matter of detail to be settled once the general principle of establishing competitions has been decided.
