CONTINUED EXPANSION
MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY
MINISTER ANTICIPATES RECORD FIGURES.
RIVALRY BETWEEN CENTRES FOR FACTORIES.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day
“The expansion of manufacturing industries continues steadily," said the Minister of Industries and Commerce. Mr Sullivan, last evening. "The growing interest in the expansion of industry is evidenced in the anxiety of local authorities in their publicly expressed desire to have their local claims considered when new factories are to be erected. This healthy rivalry between the various centres is all to the good, and it shows that there is a very live interest in current developments.
“So far as industry itself is concerned, the expansion of production and the general tone of buoyancy demonstrates that our manufacturers arc eagerly undertaking the task of filling the gaps created by import selection,” added Mr Sullivan. “Paint manufacturers report exceptional business and the demand for women’s hosiery that operatives are now working at top pressure and it has been found necessary for the mills to instal extra plant to reach maximum production. “Those firms which specialise in the manufacture of clothing report that there has been a very perceptible growth in the demand during recent months. A new industry that is attracting attention is the manufacture of electric refrigerators, and as a potential industry it holds great possibilities for establishment and extension.
“The printing trade and the manufacture of cardboard boxes has received a decided fillip and good business is reported. In this connection it is interesting to note that arrangements are now under way for the manufacture of a full range of printers’ inks in New Zealand. There is a growing demand for special inks, and this* is to be met by local enterprise. This serves to illustrate that the expansion of one industry may well mean increased activity in several industries in meeting the demand for necessary supplies. "Parchment lampshades find a ready market and one firm has undertaken the processing of its own paper and is turning out no fewer than 40 styles in this commodity. The plant was designed and manufactured in New Zealand, again proving that the initiative of New Zealand engineers is equal to the occasion.
“The entire position today shows that, given the opportunity, our workers and manufacturers can meet the demands made upon them. The signs of industrial expansion are to be seen on every hand, and the sustained volume of production from our factories inspires the belief that still further high level record figures will be established this year.”
