THE PORT BOWEN
FURTHER EFFORTS TO TOW LINER OFF PROGRESS IN UNLOADING CARGO. THREE TUGS AT WORK. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI, This Day. The sixth attempt to pull the liner Port Bowen off was made at high water at 1.3!) p.m. today. Three tugs, the Kahanui, Terawhiti and Toia are co-operating. The work of lightening the Port Bowen has now been speeded up. The vessel is at present dumping 3000 tons of bunker coal. The last of the cargo of cheese was brought ashore today, and it is expected that an early start will, be made with the unloading of frozen meat. Soundings were taken around the Port Bowen at high water today, the Wanganui. Harbour Board pilot launch being commissioned for this work. An officer from the Port Bowen took the! soundings. Captain R. D. Stewart, who is in charge of the dredge Kaione, working at Nelson, flew to Wellington today and came to Wanganui by service car. He has been brought over to relieve masters in the employ of the Wanganui Harbour Board, who have been on duty almost continuously since early on Wednesday.
A second attempt to pull the liner off is being made this afternoon, with three tugs. If the effort fails, further attempts will be made tomorrow.
