A spokesman declared that despite declarations by Lord Halifax and Mr Chamberlain, Germany would not admit openly what she knows privately—that the Western Powers are solidly behind a united Poland.. If common sense is to prevail, it must begin in Berlin, the spokesman said. GERMAN REITERATION DESIRE FOR A PEACEFUL SETTLEMENT. (Received This Day, 11.35 a.m.) DANZIG, July 21. German circles are reiterating their desire for a peaceful, but uncompromising solution. They declared that if the Russian negotiations break down, as is most likely, Britain will advise Poland in her own interests to make concessions. Defence measures are being pushed on, but the Nazis deny that Germany has sent troops. STATEMENT DISCOUNTED (Received This Day, 12.5 p.m.) LONDON, July 21. “The Times” says the German statement is considered too naive to be taken seriously. Berlin is surprised that the London Press gave prominence to the statement, which did not mean that German policy had been altered. FRENCH SCEPTICISM (Received This Day, 12.5 p.m.) PARIS, July 21. A Quai D’Orsay spokesman said the German statement could be regarded as more trustworthy if German military activity ceased. POSTELAU SHOOTING POLAND DEMANDS REDRESS. (Received This Day, 12.5 p.m.) LONDON, July 21. . The Warsaw correspondent of “The Times” says M. Chodacki has ... rejected the Danzig Senate’s explanation of the Postelau shooting (of a Polish trader guard), demands the punishment of the murderer and reserves liberty of action. The Poles arrested a Danzig Customs officer on Polish territory at Kartuzy.
