MORE SNOW
<. FOOT DEEP ON RIMUTAKA ROAD HIGHWAY TOO DANGEROUS FOR TRAFFIC. AUTOMOBILE PATROLS HELD UP. A substantial fall of snow occurred on the Rimutaka Hill last night and this morning and in consequence the road was closed to traffic this morning. The road is considered to be in a dangerous condition and there is little chance of cars being able to get through meantime. Every effort is being made by tho Public Works Department and Automobile Association patrols to reopen the road as soon as possible. It is stated that snow is lying about a foot deep near the Summit. At 10.30 it was still snowing heavily. Service cars are negotiating the hill with the aid of chains. At 10 o’clock this morning there were about six inches of snow on the hill and this was increased to a foot by midday. Both the Wellington and the Wairarapa Automobile Association patrol cars were snowed in and the road is quite impassible except for vehicles provided with chains. Bitterly cold weather was expert enced in Masterton this morning, but the town and its immediate neighbourhood appears to have escaped any further falls .of snow, although a slight fall of snow occurred in Carterton this morning. A frost of eight degrees was recorded in Masterton this morning.
