WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
MEETING AT KAHUTARA
("Times-Age” Special.)
At the monthly meeting of the Kahutara branch of the Women’s Institute Mrs McKenna presided over a good attendance of members. Apologies for absence’ were received from Mesdames Cole, Feast, Dully and Miss Cole. It was decided to invite Miss O. Wolters (Carterton) to give a demonstration at the next meeting.
Arrangements were made for the Institute Ball which will take place in the Kahutara Hall. An interesting demonstration was given by Mrs Rogers, in making humpties from waste paper. Mrs Rogers was accorded a vote of thanks and presented with a shoulder spray.
The junior members entertained with a radio sketch. .
The competitions resulted as follows: —Seniors: Covered lamp shade. Mrs Duffy, 1; Mrs Pope, 2. Juniors: Best dressed doll, Miss P. Nikolaison, 1; Miss E. Harvey. 2. The tea hostesses were Mesdames Playle. Pottinger, Pound and Harvey.
Hockey Dance.
At a social and dance held by the Hockey Club in the Anzac Hall on Saturday night there was a very good attendance. Mr Chas. Buck acted as M.C., and the music was supplied by Mr D. Te Tau. Extras were played by Mesdames Barclay and R. Skipage, and Mr Ron. Sadler (piano-accordion). The Monte Carlo was won by Mr P. Ritchie and Miss Molly Clapshaw and the Statue Waltz by Mr R. Sadler and Mrs R. Skipage. The winner of the parcel competition was Mr D. McKenna. Supper was supplied by a committee of ladies. Football Match. A football match between the Hutt Workshops and Cross Creek resulted in a win for Hutt by 8 points (2 tries, 1 converted) to 3 points. The match was played before a large attendance. Mr E. Perry was the referee. Personal Items. Mr G. Holcroft. Ashhurst, is visiting Featherston and is the guest of Mr W. H. Sadler, Tauherenikau. Miss Betty Rowles, Wellington, was home for the weekend. Mr G. Harkness is spending a holiday in New Plymouth. Mr J. Anderson, of Kahutara. has returned from a visit to Christchurch and Wellington. Mr E. J. Playle, of Kahutara. is visiting Marton and New Plymouth. Paperchase at Kahutara. On Saturday afternoon a paperchase took place at Kahutara. being run over the properties of Mrs Arthur Pearce, Mr H. C. Pearce and Mr Peter Pearce. About 15 riders took part and the jumping was excellent. No spills were recorded. The trail was laid by Mr Percy Tilson, whose mount jumped faultlessly. After the run the hunters and others were entertained at afternoon tea by Mr and Mrs Peter Pearce at their residence. A pleasing function which took place was a presentation to Miss Vallance in view of her approaching marriage.
